Why Do We Love Horses?

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, I thought it might be fun to briefly talk about why we love horses. If your favorite valentine is one who eats hay and is currently in the process of shedding, you probably don’t need any specific reason. You love horses; it’s as simple as that. Sometimes people ask you why horses are such a special part of your life. While the reasons may be diverse, here are a few thoughts on why we love horses and seek to include them in our lives.

Inspiration

Horses are creatures of beauty. Beauty may be in the eyes of the beholder, but horses have inspired artists and poets throughout the ages. They are living art forms that remind us of the natural wonders of the world. This in turn inspires us to live our lives at a higher level.

Their Heart

From trying all out to win a race to doing everything possible to make their “person” happy, horses give their all to humans.

They’re the Best Teachers

Not only do horses teach us how to ride, but they also teach us how to be a decent human. From learning the responsibility that comes from taking care of horses to building empathy, there are many valuable lessons we receive from our equine friends. Horses see our inner selves. They don’t care if we are the CEO or the janitor in the local school. They see us for who we really are. There is no room for ego in a relationship with a horse. We have to earn their respect, trust, and be honest with them and ourselves.

They Give Us Peace

Horses relax us and intuitively seem to know what we need. They act as natural tranquilizers. Their very presence can lower blood pressure and improve our mood. Horses live in the moment and often force those around them to do it as well. Horses’ even attitudes toward both the bad and the good remind us to take everything as it comes and realize that everything has its moment.

They’re the Embodiment of Good

In a world where bad headlines often reign, horses are the definition of what it means to be good. They are kind and gentle and willing to follow humans to the ends of the earth if that’s what it takes to make us happy.

Riding is a Great Exercise

Burning calories and toning muscles while enjoying nature is the ultimate goal. The combination of barn work, grooming, and regular riding is one of the best kept fitness secrets around. Incorporating horses into your life is a good way to make healthy living a habit. Horses are dependent on us for care and that forces us to stay active on a regular basis.
